I. LÝ THUYẾT
A) Mạo từ không xác định: a/an
► Mạo từ “a”: đứng trước danh từ đếm được, số ít và danh từ đó phải bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm.
Ex: a house, a student
► Mạo từ “an”: Đứng trước danh từ đếm được số ít và danh từ đó bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm (a,e,i,o,u).
Ex: an apple, an umbrella
B) Mạo từ xác định “the”
► Đứng trước một danh từ xác định đã được nhắc ở phía trước (người nghe đã biết được đối tượng mà người nói nhắc đến là gì)
Ex: I bought a cat and a dog yesterday. The cat is white and the dog is black.
► Đứng trước một danh từ mà sau danh từ đó có một mệnh đề hay cụm từ theo sau làm rõ nghĩa.
Ex: I know the girl who is standing over there.
► Đứng trước các danh từ là chỉ người hoặc vật chỉ có DUY NHẤT.
Ex: The Earth goes around the sun.
► Đứng trước một danh từ để chỉ những sự vật mọi người đều biết
Ex: We had a sightseeing tour around the city.
C) Các trường hợp không sử dụng mạo từ “a/an/the”
► Với các danh từ số nhiều hoặc không đếm được khi người nói muốn nói về sự việc chung:
Ex: Passwords protect our personal information
► Với các bữa ăn, ngày, tháng và các dịp đặc biệt trong năm:
Ex: I visit my grandparents on New Year’s Day
► Trước tên quốc gia, châu lục, núi, hồ, đường:
Ex: We visited Lake Victoria. It’s in East Africa.
